Core Training
Hill Park offers Core Training to its own staff as well as to staff across our Outreach Schools.
We recommend that this training is refreshed annually. We try to run these courses regularly across the year. Please get in touch with our training co-ordinator who can give you the next available dates : training@hillpark.brighton-hove.sch.uk
There is a charge of £15 per participant for all core training.
Manual Handling
- Course duration: 1.5 hours
- Max no. participants: 12
This training is designed to give staff a basic understanding of how to safely lift and move objects to protect their backs and joints and prevent any unnecessary injury.
This training takes approx. 1.5 hour and we recommend annual refresher training which takes 1 hour.
All training includes theory and a practical element and suitable clothing/footwear should be worn.
This training should be undertaken by all staff, particularly those who may need to assist in the safe movement of pupils with physical disabilities. The trainers can give detailed and specific advice with open discussion throughout the training session welcomed and encouraged.
NB: This training does not include Hoist Training; there is a separate Hoist Training course available.
Intimate & Personal Care
This training supports staff to carry out intimate and personal care for a pupil in a professional and dignified way. The training references the Local Authority's model policy and participating schools need to have their own policy in place in line with this so that the training does not contradict their school policy. It is recommended that this training is adopted by a whole school, not individual staff.
All resources can be downloaded from links below.
We recommend new staff watch the training video as part of their induction. It takes around 45 minutes to complete. You will need a copy of the care plan and a pen and paper.
Safe Use of Hoist
- Course duration: 1.5 - 2 hours
- Max no. participants: 12
This training enables staff to use an overhead or mobile hoist and other equipment to safely move a pupil.
This training takes approximately 1.5 - 2 hours, depending on group size and we recommend annual refresher training of 1 hour.
The training consists of two parts: theory and practical, so suitable clothing and footwear should be worn. For the practical part of the training, all participants will need to show safe use of the hoist, alongside the trainers' guidance.
Information and discussion on pupil sling assessments is now included within the theory.
NB: The trainers are unable to carry out pupil sling assessments on pupils that do not attend Hill Park.
